Socrates, Aristotle & Plato

Dear Diary,

Having worked in advising for more than 20 years at a rural college I thought I had heard everything, but today an incoming freshman gave us all something to smile about.

During an advising session for her first semester of classes, the young lady asked a lot of questions about the content of her General Education classes, but she didn’t seem that impressed by the answers. Her final question was what would she learn in Introduction to Philosophy. Using the office’s standard answer, her advisor replied knowingly, “Ah, this class will study the ideas of great philosophers such as Socrates, Aristotle and Plato.” At that, the young lady perked up and with a big smile said, “Oh, I would love that! You mean we get to play with Play Doh in class?” Her Dad, who was sitting across from his lovely blonde, blue-eyed daughter, just shook his head in disbelief, while her advisor struggled to keep a straight face. Once again proving that a college advisor’s life is never boring.

  2. Of course she was blonde (being blonde, I’m allowed to take offense – LOL!

  3. That reminds me of the email I received from a student, in which she mentioned taking a self-paste course.

  4. Wow…as we like to say “There is never a dull moment!” But in this case…you got to love the innocent.

  5. Thanks for sharing the story with us….

  6. Our Summer Session used to have three distinct sub-sessions, the first called Intersession. We often had students from other countries ask about the InterCourse Session (as opposed to the Intersession course).

  7. This tops them all.

  8. Funny stuff!

  9. When talking about a Contemporary Moral Issues course I mentioned one of the topics covered was euthanasia to which the student I was meeting with wondered what was wrong with the youth in Asia…

  10. We just remind our students that blonde is a hair color, not a condition.

  11. @Terry it’s funny you should mention this as I am also blonde and just bleached my hair platinum blonde but that is besides my point. I have been doing some research and I have found studies that directly correlatehair colour , gender and IQ level. Funnily enough blonde comes close with brunette as the highest average IQ with red lagging slightly behind in one gender(i forget which one) and those with black hair being the clear lowest average IQ.
