Dear Diary,
In our office we had just finished another Fall graduation and began to get ready for the Spring semester. I was busy updating records of the graduating seniors when the receptionist came to my desk inquiring about one of my students.
Apparently the student at the window was trying to register for the Spring semester and had a hold on his registration from our office. I looked for his paperwork but couldn’t find it so I decided to double check our student system and there it was… He had graduated in the Fall semester and didn’t know it! That’s right…I had posted his degree and he was now a graduate of our fine institution. To his credit, he was working on a couple of ‘incompletes’ and wasn’t sure if the professors turned in the grade changes in time for the Fall graduation, but they did.
Normally in our office we see students who think they’ve graduated, but actually haven’t for some reason or another. This was such a refreshing take on things that I had to share it with everyone in our office. In fact, this story made it all the way to the Provost’s office. I was at a meeting with the Provost and he to relayed this story to everyone in the room. Some didn’t believe it, until I raised my hand and assured them it occurred and wasn’t an urban legend.

Thanks for submitting this story. What a happy surprise! It must have been great to be the bearer of such good news rather than the usual bubble burst. I love those moments.

So nice to get to give good news!
Thank you for sharing the story. A colleague of mine also had a very similar experience with a student last month. The degree was already conferred; however, the student was completely oblivious! My colleague proceeded to complete a degree checklist for her – only to find on the last screen on her transcrpt – DEGREE DATE: 06/2009 DEGREE TYPE: BACHELOR OF SCI MAJOR(S): PSYCHOLOGY
It was amusing at first, but, then, we thought it was pretty scary!
